Why the tooling is not interchangeable
This is the mistake that costs the most, so it is worth being specific about the mechanism.
Opt-in platforms like Mailchimp and Klaviyo send from shared IP pools. Their deliverability depends on every customer on that pool sending only to people who asked. Their terms of service prohibit cold sending, and they enforce that by suspending accounts — not out of pedantry, but because one customer’s complaint rate degrades placement for everyone else on the pool.
Cold outreach therefore needs its own infrastructure: its own domains, its own mailboxes, and warm-up per mailbox. That is why cold email tools look strange to someone arriving from inbound marketing. The unit is not the campaign, it is the mailbox.

Reply rate and meetings booked are the honest measures. They are also harder to inflate, which is why vendors quoting open-rate benchmarks are usually quoting the wrong number.
Before the first send
Buy domains early so they age while you set up. Publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC and confirm they resolve rather than merely exist — this checker walks the full include tree and flags duplicate records. Warm every mailbox for two to three weeks, counting warm-up traffic inside the daily cap. Verify the list and keep accept-all domains in their own bucket.
